What Are The Face Styles and how do they differ?

Deep Circular Milling

We'll start with what people thing of first when they think "Face Milling".

Deep circular milling is the iconic milling style for solid metal putters. This style gives you the softest feeling configuration no matter the material. This milling style results in a soft thud when making contact as has the lowest smash factor off the face. It's the closest you can get to an multi-part putter with urethane insert like some of the the major OEM manufacturers while still having 1 piece construction of your putter.

You can tell the difference between Deep and Medium milling in one specific spot. Instead of looking at the depth of the milling, take a look at the point that is formed on the highest point away from the face. For deep milling the diamonds above and below the center line will look like a point.

We've seen this pretty much on every material that we have to offer. You can go with a firmer Standard Stainless Steel material or go all the way down to the softest German Stainless Steel. If you wanted the ultimate soft feel maybe you need to consider either a deep milled GSS (German Stainless Steel) putter or deep milled Copper inserted putter.

Medium Circular Milling

Medium circular milling could be the most popular face milling selected by the general masses of players that want us make them a putter. Medium milling is the perfect balance for those players that want to start to hear a more audible click but don't want to go all the way to Fine or Smooth face which is quite pronounced to the ear. This would be our "jack of all trades" of face styles you can select for your custom putter.

You can tell the difference between Deep and Medium milling in one specific spot. Medium milling there will be a flat spot at the highest point of the milling rather than a point in the deep mill.

Fine Circular Milling

Fine Circular Milling used to be the golden standard of face milling. Almost all of those older style putters of the late 90's and early 2000's had this style of face. This face style had a more audible click at impact. At this depth of face milling you start to get more feedback. Better players usually start here for their face milling as they want to know indefinitely if they have hit a good putt. With softer feeling milling you lose this ability.

You'll often see fine circular milling with softer materials like Mild Carbon Steel, German Stainless Steel, or Copper Inserts.

Ultra Fine Face Milling

Ultra Fine Face Milling is one we would say is "for the purists out there". Yes, we know there is one more step that goes down from here, but this is the lightest milling you will see on the market. At this level, you get a smooth face sounding click.

We often don't see players opt for this unless they have chosen to go softer metals like Mild Carbon Steel, German Stainless (GSS), or Copper.

Smooth Face Milling

we typically do not recommend this to players that do not know they want it. It's a very certain type of player that comes to us wanting the smooth face on the putter - Tour Pros and Putting Savants. That player is typically opting for our most soft materials to pair with this as well.

To get to this smooth face we start with the ultra fine face above and give it the special sauce treatment to get it even smoother.

We often see this milling with German Stainless Steel (GSS) and Copper Inserts.

True Spiral Smooth Face

The True Spiral face is an iteration of our smooth face, it's a fun new take on a firm feeling putter face. This one looks the part as you can see in the picture!

We often see this milling with German Stainless Steel (GSS) and Copper Inserts and occasionally we'll throw it on a Mild Carbon Steel for the workbench!

V-Grooved Face

as most putter manufacturers are opting for horizontal milling on their face Kari wanted to come up with his own version with his own pitch of milling. We felt that some of the manufacturers out there were just kind of mailing it in. The angle we landed on helps grab the cover of the ball and get it rolling quickly.

this milling has a feel that's somewhere between Deep Circular Milling and Medium Circular Milling. It also is helpful for players that get that skipping and hopping directly after face contact with in turn slows down your putt. We like to recommend this to players during fitting that have a hard time getting their putts all the way to hole and leave it short. If that sounds like you - V-Grooves could be the perfect face milling style for you!
